Introducing the Characters from Crystals of Ulstra

Rubena is the second POV character you’ll meet in Crystals of Ulstra, my debut queer fantasy novel I’m currently aiming to publish in late 2026.
It’s difficult to divulge much about Rubena without wading into spoilers, but let’s start here: She’s the most powerful sorceress in all of Ulstra. She is the leader of the magical government and headmistress of the academy of mages. Rubena is revered—and in some places, feared—the world over.
Proud yet pragmatic, she wields her power and political instinct to rally allies, guide a new generation, and confront the shadows of her own past.
An Interview with Rubena
Fragments of a conversation with Rubena Rugastono, Mago of Taumaturgio
Recorded by a junior chronicler at Taumaturgio, sometime before the war
Where do you live?
I live in the city of Taumaturgio, the most magical place in the world.
How is your relationship with your family?
I never knew them. I had a son once—but he’s been gone twenty years. My family are my friends and allies who’ve stood by my side forever.
What are your biggest strengths?
I am a natural-born leader. I am decisive. Very often, I excel at what I do.
And what are your weaknesses?
I don’t intend to be rude or offend others, but my brain can sometimes move too quickly, meaning I’ll skip right over the expected social niceties.
What is your proudest moment?
I was honored by my unanimous election as Maven of the Mago. I think I am even prouder of my lengthy tenure as Estrino of the Magiakademio. Education is freedom, and it’s imperative the mages of Ulstra remain free.
What is your biggest fear?
That Aglo will win the war. Magic will be destroyed. Ulstra will crumble. We can’t let it happen. I’ll do whatever it takes to prevent that dark future.
Who do you trust?
I can count them on one hand: Napo. Mezu. Cejana. And Caro Grifo. I don’t offer my trust generously, but it is still possible for one to earn it.
What is your romantic history?
I’ve known several men and women, but only one still has my heart. Napo, my bonded Kavaliro and a commander in the magic city, is my true love.
Are you religious, spiritual, or agnostic?
I am not religious, but I know which gods are real and which ones aren’t.
Do you have any prized possessions?
I collect the finest fashions from Cevali and absurdly expensive jewelry. I’d give any of them up for my fluorite trio, a cherished gift from my love.
I hope you’ve had fun getting to know Rubena. Stay tuned for the next installment of the People of Ulstra series introducing a new character!
