Introducing the Characters from Crystals of Ulstra

(Artwork by Frejj)
When I first envisioned Ulstra, Tondra was one of the first four iconic archetypal characters I saw in my mind. She is a fearless captain of the Gardistona warriors of Zirkono Minado, who protect Ulstra’s eastern coasts, keep the dark forest of Mortarbaro under control, and safeguard the world’s resources.
Tondra is the older sister of Gerda, a POV character in the book. Much of Tondra’s initial arc centers around reuniting with Gerda during the war.
Tondra’s bold nature shines through in her character portrait. Her traditional Gardistona armor is visually stunning. I am so pleased with how her artwork turned out. Partnering with Frejj on these portraits has been a wonderful experience. I truly don’t think any other artist would have captured the spirit of the people of Ulstra in quite the same way.
An Interview with Tondra
Part of an interview with Tondra Etagemo, Gardistona of Zirkono Minado
Recorded by a librarian scribe at Zirkono Minado shortly before the war
Did you always plan to become a Gardistona?
Yes. My mother was a crystal seeker, but I knew early on I didn’t have the gift. My calling lay in a different arena. When I saw the Gardistona, all in sturdy pink armor, with greatswords and other fine weapons, marching in a forbidding group like goddesses among usโI knew I wanted to be that.
What is a day in the life like for you at Zirkono Minado?
I wake up early every day. I can’t sleep when the sun is up. I patrol the fort and the mines, check in with my superiors, and train my soldiers. I often take meals at the dining hall, but sometimes I enjoy cooking on my own. I try to check in with Gerda at least once per day, often down in the mines. I usually end my day in a steaming hot bathtub, where I soak for an hour.
Who do you trust the most?
That’s an easy question. I trust Gerda more than anyone I have ever met.
What are your biggest strengths?
I’m charismatic. I like to lead, and am skilled at it. I’m tough and resilient.
And what are your weaknesses?
I can be as stubborn as quicksand. I am working on being less dogmatic.
Have you ever known love?
Yes, I haveโmany different kinds. Family, friends, and romantic partners. To answer your question directly: I am currently single, but open to more.
Are you religious?
I don’t often pray to them, but I firmly believe the mountain gods are real.
What are your hobbies?
I exercise every morning, followed by a long walk through the fortress and the surrounding area. I mentor younger Gardistona. I cook simple meals.
What do you value you most?
My family and my soldiers. I can’t think of anything I’d put above them.
What does Ulstra’s future hold?
Stability. Independence from tyranny. I can only hope I’m proven right.
What did you think about Tondra? You can get to know her even better in my debut novel Crystals of Ulstra when it’s self-published later this year.
