Introducing the Characters from Crystals of Ulstra

(Artwork by Frejj)
I’ve already shared how my first vision of Ulstra was of four archetypal figures: two forest guardians, one a mage and the other a warrior; a fierce soldier with magenta armor and vibrant pink hair; and a wizened druid with white hair, heavy coats, and staff that glittered with raw diamonds.
That final character was Glacimonto. He is a guarded elder from the wintry land of Mistika. He was exiled from his home following the death of his brother, Fjordio. His only surviving relation is his daughter, Malva.
Glacimonto is in his mid-seventies. He’s lived a full life. But before it ends, he knows he must use his powers to defend the magic of Ulstra.
This is one of my favorite character portraits that Frejj has created so far. The artwork perfectly captures Glacimonto’s mysterious nature and ancient-feeling power.
An Interview with Glacimonto
Fragments of a conversation with Glacimonto Glacero, Druido of Mistika
Documented by a record keeper at Konservi, shortly before Glacimonto’s exile
Tell us about your childhood.
That was many years ago now, though I still remember it quite vividly.
My childhood was not unlike any other in Mistika. My father and mother were kind souls. They worked hard to keep us fed and warm. They had two sons—myself, and my younger brother Fjordio, who recently died.
Our parents taught us to be self-reliant and keep faith against long odds. I still carry those lessons with me today, long after they departed our world.
Do you have any children of your own?
Yes. I have a daughter named Malva. Her mother died when she was young and I did my best to raise her on my own. She’s a grown woman now, but she will always be my only child no matter how old she grows.
What is your Druido form?
The lynx form runs in our family. My daughter has inherited it, as well. There is no better feeling than running through the snow on four paws.
What are your biggest strengths?
I’m independent and resourceful. I have survived countless harsh Mistika winters. I am not intimidated by others, even if they’re powerful or strong.
And what are your weaknesses?
I don’t consider being careful a flaw, but sometimes I can take it too far. I can be too solitary for my own good. And I wish I were more charismatic.
What’s the last book you read?
The Fascinating History of Mistika’s Long-haired Goats, written by my friend, Patro Arkto. It details the first time nomads made contact with the goats. It was the beginning of a mutually beneficial relationship between animal and man. The goats practically beg for their long hair to be shorn in the summer. We use the mohair to line our coats, making the winter bearable.
What are your religious beliefs?
The Druido worship the gods of the earth, the sky, the water, and flame.
What was your proudest moment?
Easy. The day my daughter Malva was born. And I remain just as proud.
What’s your favorite meal?
I’m partial to frosted root stew, chock full of carrots, onions, and turnips.
Should Mistika be isolated or more connected with the rest of Ulstra?
These days, I don’t think it’s wise to answer a question like this publicly.
I hope you’ve enjoyed getting to know Glacimonto. Now, meet the People of Ulstra.
