Rego Aglo is the mad king, who has ruled from the throne in Kastelspajro for years. He is cruel, vindictive, and increasingly paranoid. At the start of Crystals of Ulstra, he has just declared a war on magic—the kind of unwinnable fight that only a tyrant would choose.

Aglo has one of the most interesting and complex background stories of any character in the book. I can’t give too much away without entering spoiler territory, but let’s just say you’ll want to hold on tight as his many threads begin to unravel throughout the book.

Once again, it was a pleasure to work with Frejj on bringing this character to life. I think this may have taken the crown as my favorite portrait Frejj has illustrated for Ulstra so far.

An Interview with Rego Aglo

When and where were you born?

What can you tell us about your family?

I’m madly in love with my wife, Queen Espera. I have two strapping sons, Prince Cartrezo and Prince Lazuro, either of whom would make a worthy successor to the throne one day.

Can you define your political philosophy?

Ulstra needs a strong hand to guide it and ensure it prospers. Freedom is anarchy; people are not capable of self-governance. The sooner people accept this, the happier they’ll be.

What are your biggest strengths?

I am decisive, strategic, authoritative, tenacious, influential, handsome, and charismatic.

And what are your weaknesses?

Who told you I have weaknesses? I want names.

Are you religious?

I worship the Eagle God, just as any decent, upstanding citizen of Ulstra should do.

Why have you declared war on Ulstra’s magic?

Illegal magic must come to heel. It can destroy our world if left unchecked. The only magic that is permissible is performed with my expressed consent to benefit the crown.

Who are your most valued allies?

A man in my position can’t afford to trust many people. I value Veziro Taguno because I know he will always tell me the truth. Speaker Juneco has proven himself a royal ally. I trust the members of my war council to varying degrees. Obviously, my family is loyal.

Who are your most troublesome enemies?

Anyone who seeks to stoke rebellion in the capital or the continent at large. The pathetic Kavaliro soldiers from Glavo Brilo who think they’re a match for my royalist army. The dangerous sorceress Rubena who seeks my destruction so she may rule in my place.

How do you envision Ulstra’s future?

Before I die, every region will fully submit to the crown and magic will be eliminated.

The interview concluded abruptly when an attendant ushered Rego Aglo away.

What did you think about Rego Aglo, Ulstra’s villain? You can get to know him even better in my debut epic fantasy novel Crystals of Ulstra when it’s released on December 4.
